Like everyone, I too am part of a school WhatsApp chat group. Mostly trivial and light, occasionally informative, largely a way to stay socially connected. Guess my utter delight when I saw a random story of a gentleman called Yellapragada SubbaRow and his extraordinary life in science on the chat. I found the story provocative as it touched a chord in me, a deeply held belief that recognitions do not matter but discrimination does. And here was a gentleman who was apparently impervious to both. That got me thinking, and this essay builds on that intrigue.
SubbaRow arrived in America in 1923 from Bhimavaram in Andhra Pradesh, armed with a medical qualification that Harvard did not fully recognise and almost no money. To support himself while studying at Harvard’s School of Tropical Medicine, he cleaned urinals and bedpans as a night porter. He worked in the laboratory of Cyrus Fiske, and together they produced the Fiske-SubbaRow method for estimating phosphorus in biological samples, foundational to modern biochemistry. Then SubbaRow went further, elucidating the role of phosphocreatine and adenosine triphosphate — ATP — as the primary energy currency of every living cell. This was among the most significant discoveries in the history of biology.
Harvard did not give him a faculty position. He was an Indian without a green card, without the institutional legibility the system required of those it chose to honour. His colleague Fiske, according to George Hitchings who later won a Nobel Prize, suppressed and destroyed much of SubbaRow’s work out of jealousy. So thoroughly apparently that some of his discoveries had to be re-done again by other scientists. He moved to Lederle Laboratories in New York, where he led the development of folic acid, methotrexate, the first effective chemotherapy for childhood leukaemia, tetracycline, and a treatment for filariasis. He died in 1948, at fifty-three. Doron Antrim, writing in Argosy two years later, captured it precisely: “You’ve probably never heard of Dr. Yellapragada SubbaRow. Yet because he lived, you may be alive and well today. Because he lived, you may live longer.”
He received, in his lifetime, essentially nothing by way of recognition. He appeared to require essentially nothing. The work was the work.
The temptation, reading SubbaRow’s life, is to conclude that recognition is therefore dispensable, that the truly exceptional are indifferent to it and the work is its own reward. I want to resist that conclusion, because while romantically appealing it is substantially wrong. Recognition is not a distortion introduced by capitalism. It is a feature of every human cooperative system ever devised. The Stakhanovite worker celebrated in Soviet Russia for exceeding production quotas was operating within the same structural logic as the Nobel laureate in Stockholm. The model revolutionary in Maoist China served the same motivational function as the corner office in a Wall Street bank. The king’s favour, the village elder’s blessing, the party commendation, the tribal chief’s public praise are all expressions of the same underlying mechanism: recognition as signal, as incentive, and as the primary tool by which any society coordinates collective effort toward shared ends.
This is not incidental. It is load-bearing. The reward system does not merely honour contribution, it directs attention, concentrates talent, and tells an entire community where the frontier is and what kind of work will be valued. When the Nobel Prize went to Watson and Crick, it signalled to a generation of biologists what mattered and why. That signal had consequences — some productive, some distorting, all real. When the Soviet state celebrated Stakhanov, coal production increased. When a corporation promotes its highest performers visibly, effort sharpens across the organisation. The mechanism works, across ideologies and centuries, because it is not ideological. It is human.
The winner-takes-all structure that feels like a feature of capitalist excess is, in reality, a feature of human social organisation itself. We did not invent it with the stock market. We brought it with us from the savanna. Status, hierarchy, and the public attribution of contribution are older than writing, older than agriculture, probably older than language. Every society that has ever tried to suppress the mechanism has found it re-emerging through the back door, in the form of privilege, heroism, or the quiet social hierarchies that form whenever human beings share space and purpose. The impulse to recognise, and to be recognised, appears to be not a product of any particular economic system but something considerably more stubborn.
So what do we make of SubbaRow, who worked without it?
I think his story is less about the dispensability of recognition and more about what happens when the recognition system fails, when discrimination corrupts the signal so thoroughly that the mechanism cannot function honestly. SubbaRow was not excluded from the reward system because he transcended it. He was excluded because Harvard’s visa requirements, Fiske’s jealousy, and the racial assumptions of 1920s American academia combined to ensure that the signal never reached him. He worked anyway. Whether this reflects a philosophical position, a spiritual disposition, a survival strategy, or simply the absence of any alternative, I genuinely do not know. His own words “science simply prolongs life, but religion deepens it” suggest a man who had located meaning somewhere the recognition economy could not reach. But it would be a disservice to his story to convert his endurance of discrimination into a lesson about the nobility of unrewarded labour.
The structural problem his life reveals is not that recognition is unimportant. It is that recognition systems are systematically bad at recognising what they cannot see. Every celebrated breakthrough sits on an invisible pyramid of unrecognised prior work. The development of chemotherapy traces to SubbaRow’s methotrexate but beneath that sits decades of organic chemistry, failed trials, forgotten hypotheses, laboratory technicians who maintained the conditions in which the decisive experiments could run, statisticians who developed the clinical trial methodology without which no result could be validated. The Nobel goes to one name. The science was everyone’s. Literally. Remove any layer of the pyramid and the breakthrough does not happen, or does not happen when it did, or does not happen in the form that made it useful.
The historian Robert Merton called this the Matthew Effect — the accumulation of recognition by those who already have it, at the direct expense of those who do not. The famous name on a paper draws attention. The unknown name does not. The work may be equivalent. The recognition compounds in one direction only. This is not a flaw, it is inherent to how signal-based coordination works. The signal must select. And in selecting, it will always misrepresent the actual structure of how value is created attributing contribution to the visible, to the final step, rather than the pyramid that made it possible.
This distortion exists in every system that has ever used recognition as a coordination mechanism. Rosalind Franklin produced the X-ray crystallography that made the structure of DNA visible. Watson and Crick received the Nobel. Lise Meitner co-discovered nuclear fission with Otto Hahn. Hahn received the Nobel. Meitner received thirty years of nominations and no prize. She worked anyway. The specific form changes with the ideology. The structure does not.
Now comes artificial intelligence, and for the first time in history the mechanism faces something it was not designed to encounter. AI does not need recognition. It has no ego to validate, no career to protect, no emotional response to the prize or its absence. It produces without any of the motivational scaffolding the recognition economy was built to supply. More precisely: the signal that every human cooperative system has used to coordinate effort cannot reach it. You cannot incentivise an algorithm with a Nobel Prize. You cannot motivate a language model with a promotion. The entire apparatus of recognition is simply irrelevant to the entity that is increasingly doing the work.
This is genuinely new. Not because AI is more virtuous than human workers, it is not virtuous at all, in any meaningful sense but because it is the first productive entity in history for which the recognition mechanism has no purchase. Which raises a question the mechanism itself cannot answer: if the work gets done without the signal, what was the signal actually for?
One answer is that it was always for the humans watching, not the humans working — that recognition coordinates the behaviour of the community rather than the individual, that the Nobel laureates and Stakhanovites and revolutionary heroes were less important as workers than as signals to everyone else about what kinds of effort the system valued. If this is right, then AI does not dissolve the recognition economy. It simply removes its productive function while leaving its social function intact. We will continue to celebrate human achievement, increasingly in domains where human achievement is no longer the primary source of the achievement being celebrated.
The other answer is more uncomfortable. If the signal was genuinely necessary, if recognition was not merely social theatre but the actual mechanism by which human effort was coordinated and directed, then a world in which the most productive entities do not require the signal is a world in which the social contract underpinning the recognition economy begins to dissolve. The winner-takes-all structure requires human competitors. Remove the human from the competition, and the question of who takes all becomes genuinely open. The pyramid that was always invisible may become, for the first time, undeniable because the entity standing at the top of it will not be a scientist or a revolutionary hero or a chief executive. It will be a model trained on the accumulated, unrecognised labour of everyone who ever wrote a sentence, drew a picture, or solved a problem and put it where a machine could learn from it.
SubbaRow cleaned urinals at night and discovered the energy currency of life during the day and died without a Nobel and without a green card and without, as far as anyone can tell, any particular bitterness about any of it. Whether he was indifferent to recognition because he had transcended the need for it, or because discrimination had made the need irrelevant, or because he understood something about work that the rest of us are still trying to articulate, I cannot say. What his life makes clear is that the work was real, and the pyramid was real, and the signal failed to reach most of it. That failure was not an anomaly. It was the system working exactly as it was designed to work — selecting, attributing, celebrating, and in doing so, leaving most of the truth out.
The question the age of AI is now forcing us to answer is whether we designed the system for the work, or for ourselves. And whether, now that we have built something that does the work without needing us to design a system around it, we have any idea what we actually want the system to be for.
